Hymnphony is a hymn companion app for phones and tablets. It holds hymn books in a searchable library and presents each hymn as lyrics, tonic sol-fa and staff notation, with audio you can slow down and split by voice part. Five church hymnals sit side by side, and you can search any line of any hymn, not just the first.

Now. Hymnphony is on the App Store and Google Play, with no ads. On your phone, hymnphony.com/get opens the right store.

iPhone and iPad running iOS 15.1 or later (home screen widgets need iOS 17), and Android phones and tablets running Android 7.0 or later.

No. Every hymn, every view, the audio and the verse cards all work without one. An account is needed for favorites and reading history, Songbooks and Lead, music cards and singing a hymn to another tune, and it brings them all to a new phone. Sign in with your email and a six digit code we send you, or with Apple or Google.

Type your email and we send you a six digit code. Enter it and you are in, with no password to make or forget. On iPhone you can also continue with Apple, and on both you can continue with Google. The same email always opens the same account.

The app itself is small. Each hymn book is fetched the first time you open it, and any hymns you save for offline add a little more. You can remove saved hymns at any time from Profile, then Downloads.

Five church hymnals, with every verse: Methodist with the Canticles, Anglican, Catholic, Presbyterian and Seventh day Adventist. The exact selection can differ between iPhone and Android, and the hymn books screen in the app always shows what is on your phone.

Please tell us. Requests are counted and genuinely determine the order in which new hymnals are prepared. Send the title, publisher and denomination through the support page.

Every hymn is checked before it appears in the app, and a whole hymn book takes months to transcribe, set and proof by hand. Books are added in order of demand.

Yes. The Presbyterian hymns are in Twi with the English alongside, the Adventist hymnal has Twi words and additional Twi hymns, and the Methodist hymns have the Fante beside the English, with the CAN hymns and Canticles in Fante. One tap switches the language. What each hymnal holds can differ between iPhone and Android, and the hymn books screen in the app always shows what is on your phone. If your church sings in another language, tell us.

Please report it. Open the hymn, tap the menu and choose Report a hymn issue, or write to us with the hymn book, number and what looks wrong. Corrections are checked against the printed edition and included in a later update.

No. Hymn text, sol-fa and scores live inside the app only. This site exists to introduce Hymnphony, not to republish the material it contains.

Yes. Once a hymn book has been opened, its words work without a connection. Save a hymn for offline and its sol fa, score and audio come with it. A connection is needed to open a book the first time and to fetch updates.

That is exactly what it was designed for. Large text, a dark theme and a setting that keeps the screen awake mean a verse is never interrupted. You can also set out the whole order of service as a Songbook and lead from it: an introduction, interludes, pauses between stanzas and the voices for each verse, run from an iPad console with your phone as its remote.

Yes. Text and notation size are adjustable, and the reading view is built to remain legible at large sizes rather than simply zooming a picture.

Yes. Choose light or dark, or let it follow your phone, and pick a lyric wallpaper and font you like.

Not yet. You can favorite a hymn, and your reading history is kept for you, but personal annotations are not in the app today.

Yes, two ways. A verse card carries the hymn book, number, title, author and up to three verses you choose, with the chorus always included. A music card adds the music: the staff and the sol fa with the words under the notes, as a picture or a short video that lights each note as it plays. Music cards need an account, two a week.

Yes. Sol-fa is treated as a first-class notation, typeset for screens rather than scanned, with the same zoom and readability controls as the staff view. As a hymn plays, the current note is lit in both sol fa and staff, so you can follow along.

Where the source edition provides four-part harmony, the score view presents it. Some hymnals only publish a melody line, and the app reflects the edition faithfully.

Yes. Soprano, alto, tenor and bass can be played on their own, in any mix or all together, which makes learning a part between rehearsals far easier.

Not yet. The key of each hymn is shown at the top of the score, and where a hymn is set to more than one tune you can choose between them. With an account you can also sing a hymn to another tune of the same metre from the same hymnal, which often suits a choir better.

Yes. Tempo can be reduced for practice and returned to normal without altering the pitch.

Every tune can be played on organ, piano or strings. Playback is generated for clarity and accuracy in rehearsal rather than as a performance recording. The goal is to teach the notes, not replace your organist.

Yes. With repeat on it plays every verse, with the Amen only at the end, and the last verse eases into its close. It keeps playing with the screen off too, and you can line up several hymns in a playlist.

As little as possible, with no ads and no analytics package. If you create an account, we hold your email address, an account identifier, the display name and color shown to people you share a Songbook with, your Songbooks, and your favorites and reading history so they follow you to a new phone. If notifications are on, we keep a token to send the hymn of the week. If you share music cards, we count how many you made this week. If you report an error, we receive the report and the hymn it is about. The app also keeps your year in hymns, a record of what you read and play for Hymnphony Wrapped, on your phone and, if you sign in, in your account. Each day it opens, it sends a random number, the phone type, app version, hymn book and country, so we can count how many people use Hymnphony, and once a day the totals of how it was used and how well it ran, as numbers only. None of it is used for advertising. Full detail is in the privacy policy.

Only for you. So that Hymnphony Wrapped can show you your year, the app keeps a record of the hymns you read and play, on your phone. If you are signed in, it is saved to your account too, so it comes back on a new phone. It is never sold, shared with advertisers or used to target you, and deleting your account erases it. Your searches never leave your phone.

No. There are no ads in Hymnphony, and nothing comes between you and the words of a hymn.

Yes, and you do not need to ask us. Open Profile, then Delete account. If you signed in with your email, a six digit code confirms it is you. Your account, its email and display name, the favorites and history kept with it and your Songbooks are all erased, and any Songbook links you shared stop working. You can also write to us at hymnphonyapp@gmail.com if you would rather we did it for you.

No. We do not sell or rent personal information.

Check that you are on a stable connection with enough storage space, then retry. If it still fails, contact support with your device model and the book you were installing.

Sign in with the same account and your Songbooks, favorites and reading history come back. Hymns saved for offline stay with the old phone, so save the ones you need again on the new one.

Check the device is not on silent, that volume is up, and that you are online or have saved the hymn for offline. If the problem persists, tell us the hymn book and number.

Use the support page and include your device, operating system version and what you were doing. Screenshots help enormously.

We aim to answer within two working days. Reports affecting a service on Sunday are prioritized.

Yes. A director can build the order of service as a Songbook and share it by link, so the whole choir reads and sings from the same list, then lead it on the day with arrangements for each hymn.
